LOS ANGELES — Homeowners in Los Angeles County whose properties were damaged in the recent storms that moved through California can apply for relief.
LA County Assessor Jeff Prang joined Ariel Wesler on “Inside the Issues” to remind owners they may be eligible for property tax help.
“Like a lot of other property tax savings programs, a lot of them are just a mystery to a lot of property owners,” Prang said.
To file a claim for misfortune and calamity relief, the damage to the property must exceed $10,000. Owners have one year to apply.
“It’ll reduce your assessment for that part of the property which was damaged or destroyed, giving you immediate tax relief and will allow you to rebuild and keep your tax base where there’ll be no increase in your assessment,” Prang said.
So far, Prang said his office has received 20 applications, but he expects that number to increase over the next few months as people get a sense of the storm damage their properties sustained.
“If your property is damaged, worrying about filing for property tax relief is probably low on your priorities,” Prang said.
The assessor’s office is also getting the word out to property owners by sending relief applications directly to people that live in storm damaged areas.
