California Governor Gavin Newsom has outlined a plan for a new chapter in the COVID-19 pandemic.

He says if trends continue in California, we could see a full reopening on June 15th.

But, are we ready to reopen?

What You Need To Know

  • Governor Gavin Newsom plans a full reopening of California on June 15th

  • COVID-19 infection, transmission and hospitalization rates have been trending downward

  • People may still be required to wear masks, show proof of vaccination and/or provide a negative test before attending crowded events

  • Governor Newsom’s office says monitoring data is key to preventing a reopening rollback

Dee Dee Myers, who is senior advisor to Governor Newsom and director of the Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-BIZ) said yes.

She told "Inside the Issues" the June 15th date gives the state plenty of time “to make sure that we aren’t seeing something unusual, we aren’t seeing these variants take hold, we aren’t seeing people who are vaccinated get sick or infected or hospitalized.”

Myers also told host Alex Cohen that a clear date for full reopening will allow families and businesses to make effective plans as capacity restrictions expire across California.

“But, people will still be required to wear masks, and in some cases, they may still be required to be tested or vaccinated before they can go to those higher risk kinds of events,” Myers said.

Still, she said monitoring data is key to preventing a rollback of these reopening plans.

“We made these kind of decisions with the determination and the expectation that we won’t go back, we won’t have to go back,” she said.
