What is it like to be the first openly gay person in the California Legislature?

Current Los Angeles County Supervisor, Sheila Kuehl, knows. Elected in 1994, Kuehl, a former child actor, describes how her past in Hollywood and her sexual orientation had an effect on her politics.

“[The LGBTQ community was] given permission to be outlaws and that’s a very good thing when you want to make reform. You would say ‘I am a change agent. This is what I want and this is what I do,’” she said.

Kuehl brought the first bills to add sexual orientation to the anti-discrimination statutes in California.
