California hit a historic milestone this year with women comprising 49% of the state legislature.

More than half of the female legislators represent parts of Southern California.

On this week’s “In Focus SoCal,” host Tanya McRae sits down with Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner, representative of the 77th District.

Assemblywoman Boerner discussed several issues in her district and statewide.

She currently serves as chair of the Assembly Communications and Conveyance Committee, and focuses on closing the digital divide in California.

“All you need is for your Wi-Fi to go out and you realize how tied we are to it,” said Boerner. She said California families shouldn’t have to choose between paying for broadband and putting food on the table. “We should not be having that tradeoff.”

Boerner is also pushing for an early warning notification system for bluff collapses, an issue that affects San Diego.

She’s currently working with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which says the cause of a bluff collapse can only be determined after the incident right now.

“People need 10 seconds to run into the ocean, right, from a bluff, when you’re standing under the bluff,” said Boerner.

The assemblywoman is also a strong advocate for e-bikes and e-bike safety.

She launched a pilot program to increase e-bike ridership and authored a bill to curb underage e-bike use.
