SAN GABRIEL VALLEY, Calif. — In a cozy San Gabriel Valley home, Guadalupe Álvarez is surrounded by the sights and sounds of Christmas.

  • San Gabriel Valley resident Guadalupe Álvarez has decorated her home with an eight-foot-long Nativity scene

  • What began as a small display has now grown to include over 150 pieces, from sheep she’s owned for decades to a Baby Jesus figurine blessed by the Pope in Rome

  • Tamale-making is another family favorite, a labor of love that unites the family in the days leading up to Christmas

The faint scent of fresh moss and tamales fills the air as her eight-foot-long Nativity scene takes center stage — a tradition that has been part of her life for nearly 60 years.

“I’ve always had a Nacimiento,” said Álvarez, who was born and raised in Mexico. “Small or big, there’s always one in my home.”

What began as a small display has now grown to include over 150 pieces, from sheep she’s owned for decades to a baby Jesus figurine blessed by the Pope in Rome.

Every detail, including real water, moss, and stone, is lovingly tended to.

“I even water it weekly,” Álvarez said with a laugh.

Her dedication is a source of inspiration for her family, spanning four generations.

Her niece, Lila Luz Contreras, recalls helping set up the display as a child.

“It started off small, but it’s grown every year,” said Contreras. “The amount of love and effort she puts into it is amazing. It’s more than a decoration — it’s part of who we are.”

The Nacimiento is just one of many traditions Álvarez has passed down.

Tamale-making is another family favorite, a labor of love that unites the family in the days leading up to Christmas.

“Mom taught us how to make tamales, and now my kids are involved,” said Álvarez’s eldest daughter, Patricia. “It’s more than food; it’s a connection to our roots.”

On Christmas Day, the family gathers for the most important moment: placing baby Jesus in the manger, a reminder of the true meaning of the season.
