LOS ANGELES — According to the Autism Society of Los Angeles, one-third of people with autism in California live in Los Angeles County.
In Watts, there’s a food truck that’s helping to provide an important service to people living with autism and other neurodiverse young adults.
The Special Flavors Community Kitchen food truck is designed to teach valuable life skills through culinary training to neurodiverse young adults.
They learn things like food safety, food preparation, but also communication skills, organization and gaining confidence.
“Just think about all the people that know someone that’s on the Autism spectrum, and usually people think of them as little kids. But we want to show people in the community of Los Angeles what it looks like to be on the Autism spectrum, but also be gainfully employed and providing a much needed service,” Founder of Special Needs Network, Areva Martin said.
