SAN DIEGO — Ajumma EXP is a crew of fierce women who embrace growing older, getting wiser and being able to laugh at themselves.
The wig-wearing, sun-visor sporting, matching jump-suit wearing flash-mob crew bust a move to hip-hop music in places like malls, grocery stores, beachside and more.
Ajumma EXP is about celebrating women in a fun, but also meaningful way. Co-founder Lee Ann Kim said she started the flash mob crew to change the narrative around women aging.
She called the group Ajumma EXP because she said “the word ‘ajumma’ itself is a Korean word that means, middle-aged woman. And it’s very specific to the Korean culture.”
She said “ajumma” is a pejorative term with a negative connotation.
“You’re old, you’re crotchety, maybe you’re rude, maybe you’re not fashionable,” she said.
Wanting to change the narrative and embrace aging in a celebrated light, she started the crew. And these ladies can bust a move and work it to the moves put together by choreographer Mel Adao.
