HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Every morning Huntington Beach resident Adam "Bushman" Orozco gets up at 5 a.m., grabs his bag, walks across the street, and gets to work.

He's a one-person cleaning crew on a mission to keep his beloved city clean.

What You Need To Know

  • Bushman is out cleaning on his own accord, and he estimates he goes through about 400 spray paint cans a week

  • Bushman said he is not doing this for money or attention

  • Since beginning his cleaning campaign nine months ago, the city of Huntington Beach has recognized his efforts

"I just cleaned up this place a week ago, and I come back, and it's already destroyed," Bushman said.

His goal is to stay one step ahead of the taggers, he said. He said he thinks that if the vandals' work doesn't stay up for long, then maybe they won't continue.

"It only takes one person to put it up there, and now they think it's OK," Bushman said.

From memorial benches to street light posts to trash cans, Bushman leaves no blemished surface unattended.

"If we keep letting this go, it's just going to accumulate more and more," he said.

Bushman is out cleaning on his own accord. He estimates he goes through about 400 spray paint cans a week.

But his efforts haven't gone unnoticed. When Huntington locals heard about what he was doing, they started donating Home Depot gift cards so he could buy more supplies.

Bushman said he is not doing this for money or attention.

"I didn't think this was going to become my full-time job," he said. "I just became mad one day, and I just thought, 'you know, I'm going to try to solve this.'"

Since beginning his cleaning campaign nine months ago, the city of Huntington Beach has recognized his efforts.

He received a commendation award from former Mayor Lyn Semeta. The honor only made him determined to keep going, he said.

Because this isn't just his city, the Huntington Beach Community has become family, and Bushman said he is determined to keep his home clean.
