Through a new privately funded guaranteed basic income program, 250 Los Angeles Community College District students, who hope to become health care professionals, will receive $1,000 a month for a year.

The program is made possible through funding from The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation ($3,175,000) and the Young Adults Forward Fund, an initiative of the California Community Foundation ($867,500).

Priscilla Saucedo is a student at East Los Angeles College who will receive the monthly checks that, according to the college, will start before Thanksgiving.

Chapman University economist and professor Marshall Toplansky discusses some of the general concerns over programs like these.
