LOS ANGELES — The health care field is seeing major investments in artificial intelligence to help with multiple aspects, including to help lessen the load for staff at medical facilities.
Children's Hospital is using an AI robot to help make deliveries from the pharmacy to anywhere on the campus. Stephanie Espiritu is the pharmacy technician supervisor at CHLA, she says the robot, known as Moxi, cuts down on her time spent walking around the facility, which reduces fatigue at the end of her workday.
"Moxi saves us so many steps," Espiritu said. "I used to take more than 17,000 steps per shift, and was exhausted by the time I went home to my family."
CHLA says it's focusing on identifying problems before implementing new technology. With the rise of AI, the executive staff wants to continue being open to investing in change.
"There's not enough time for our team members and our clinicians to everything they need to get done on a given day," said Omkar Kulkarni, CHLA's chief transformation and digital officer. "You're seeing that across the industry, and technology like AI is really helpful."
A recent study done by the Pew Research Center finds that approximately 60% of Americans are afraid AI will replace their jobs, but Espiritu said workers should embrace technology to help make their lives easier.
"A lot of people think AI like Moxi is replacing technicians, of our staffs' jobs," Espiritu said. "But it's not. It's here to help us."
Although Moxi is used to make deliveries from the pharmacy to other departments of the hospital, it also helps during an emergency. The robot is able to function during power outages.
