LOS ANGELES — Ensuring that their flight back home to Chicago is on time is important for Neva and Andre Alexander, but more important is avoiding yet another COVID-19 infection.

LA County COVID numbers are on the rise. On July 5, there was a daily average of 229 coronavirus cases up from 154 from a couple of weeks ago.

News that motivated both Neva and Andre Alexander to take precaution when visiting family in Los Angeles.

Nationwide — an estimated 70.5% of COVID tests were of the FLiRT subvariants — up from 54.9% from a month ago.

Health experts say reported cases are an undercount, as they only factor in tests done at medical facilities, and don’t account for at-home tests or those who don’t test.
