Your Weather Planner

Saturday will be a jacket kind of day with temperatures cooling down three to six degrees.

It’ll be partly cloudy and dry. Onshore flow increases this weekend, and that could drive light showers our way Sunday.

Today's Big Stories

1. Archbishop Gomez presides over funeral Mass for slain bishop

Three days of remembrances for slain Archdiocese of Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell concluded Friday with a funeral Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

The beloved, 69-year-old “Bishop Dave” — whom Archbishop José H. Gomez described as “a peacemaker with a heart for the poor and the immigrant” — was found shot at his Hacienda Heights home just before 1 p.m. Feb. 18, and the husband of O’Connell’s housekeeper has been charged with murder.

Gomez presided over Friday’s service, and the homily was delivered by Msgr. Jarlath (Jay) Cunnane, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles said.

The service followed a memorial Mass at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Hacienda Heights on Wednesday, and public viewings and a vigil Mass on Thursday, also at the cathedral.

O’Connell was a native of Ireland and had been a priest and later a bishop in Los Angeles for 45 years.

2. Man indicted on hate crime, firearms charges in West LA Jewish shootings

A 28-year-old man suspected of shooting two Jewish men after they left synagogues in the Pico-Robertson district less than 24 hours apart was indicted Friday by a federal grand jury on hate crime and firearms charges that could put him behind bars for life.

Jaime Tran, previously of Riverside, was charged with two hate crime counts for allegedly willfully causing bodily injury and attempting to kill his victims. The grand jury in downtown Los Angeles further charged Tran with two counts of discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence.

Tran has been in federal custody since his Feb. 17 arrest on a criminal complaint in the case. His arraignment is scheduled for next Thursday in Los Angeles federal court.

In a Mirandized, recorded interview, Tran acknowledged having intentionally shot the two victims, according to an affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint and arrest warrant.

If convicted of all federal charges, Tran would face up to life in prison for each hate crime count, and between 10 years and life for each firearms count, prosecutors noted.

3. Tax deadlines extended to October for most Californians due to storms

California is extending the state tax filing and payment due dates to Oct. 16 for Californians impacted by this winter’s storms, aligning with the IRS, which previously extended the federal tax filing deadline to Oct. 16 for the same reason.

The tax relief applies to nearly all of the state’s 58 counties, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. Imperial County in the southeastern part of the state is not included.

The relief applies to deadlines falling on or after Jan. 8, 2023, and before Oct. 16, 2023, including the 2022 individual income tax returns that would have been due on April 18 and the quarterly estimated tax payments that would have been due on Jan. 17 and April 18, 2023.

California announced the extension Thursday. The IRS announced its extension in January.

4. Some San Bernardino Mountain residents could be snowed in a week

Some residents stranded in Southern California mountain communities by a huge snowfall could be stuck for another week, an official said Friday.

The estimate by San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus was an improvement in the outlook, which previously ranged up to two weeks.

“We’ve said we could push it out as far as two weeks, but because of the state’s efforts and the equipment that’s coming in behind us, we’re hoping to drop that down to a week,” he told a press conference.

The sheriff and other officials said progress has been made, but they described severe conditions that, for example, have forced firefighters to reach emergency scenes such as fires in snowcats.

The officials in San Bernardino County said crews were dealing with such tremendous depths of snow that removal required front-end loaders and dump trucks rather than regular plows.

About 80,000 people live in the San Bernardino Mountains, either part or full time. The county has not estimated how many people are currently in the mountains because many residences are vacation homes or rentals.

5. Black Vietnam vet finally honored with Medal of Honor

Nearly 60 years after he was first recommended for the nation’s highest military award for his bravery during the Vietnam War, retired Col. Paris Davis, one of the first Black officers to lead a Special Forces team in combat, received the Medal of Honor on Friday.

The belated recognition for the 83-year-old Virginia resident came after the recommendation for the medal was lost, resubmitted — and then lost again.

It wasn't until 2016 — half a century after Davis risked his life to save some of his men under fire — that advocates painstakingly recreated and resubmitted the paperwork.

“You are everything this medal means,” Biden said to Davis. “You’re everything our nation is at our best. Brave and big hearted, determined and devoted, selfless and steadfast.”
