PORTER RANCH, Calif. — Nine years after the Aliso Canyon gas blowout released more than 120,000 metric tons of methane into Porter Ranch, residents such as Patty Glueck continue to advocate for the facility’s closure.

The California Public Utilities Commission’s latest proposal delays the possible shutdown by at least three years, leaving residents feeling “betrayed.”

SoCalGas, which owns the site, argues the facility remains essential to California’s energy needs.

Meanwhile, $71 million in penalties paid by the company will fund air quality improvements and public health projects.

Health advocates and scientists are urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to prioritize closing the facility, citing ongoing health and environmental risks.
