LOS ANGELES — Dead stock is fabric destined for a dump or on a path to being burned, destroyed, or trashed.
Upcycler, thrifter and fashion designer Sarah Torres started a company called Sew by Sew, where she helps to save dead stock and give it new life for fellow creators.
Torres sells the dead stock fabric she handpicks from large warehouses in downtown Los Angeles to customers by the yard or in mystery bundles by the pound. In a year, she says, the mystery bundles have helped keep about 1,700 pounds of fabric out of landfills.
I’m With The Band also uses dead stock to create headbands, scarves and other accessories.
