LOS ANGELES — What would you do to ensure that the person you end up with was, in fact, the love of your life and the perfect match?
Would you undergo a test in which you have to lose an entire fingernail to determine your compatibility?
The film “Fingernails” gives us an alternate reality in which couples examine their devotion at love institutes by completing exercises to bring them closer together before taking a test that requires each person to submit a fingernail to determine compatibility.
Some couples are a 100% match, others score 50% — and still others, 0%.
In today’s world of app dating and swiping, is it possible to remove the risk from love entirely?
“Fingernails” director Christos Nikou told Spectrum News he believes love is illusive and something we cannot analyze.
“We just feel it. Right now, people are using technology, these dating apps, swiping left or right with their finger, using their fingernails, in order to find the perfect match. We are letting an algorithm and an AI decide about us when love is something that is more instinctive. We need to trust our instinct. It is something that we need to, not just prove it with one test, but we need to work on it every day,” he said.
Would Nikou himself take the test in the film?
He says yes — he would take off all his fingernails, if he were to find something real.
“But never for a test,” he said. “I can accept pain to find something real, but never for a test. I believe that no one else can tell us what we feel. We just need to follow our hearts and our minds.”
“Fingernails” is now streaming on Apple TV+. The film stars Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed, Jeremy Allen White, Luke Wilson and Annie Murphy.
