LOS ANGELES — The soulful sounds of the ‘60s that pianist William Purdy grew up listening to are what inspire the sound that The Boogaloo Assassins are known for.

A rhythm that will once again be heard at the 28th annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival, which takes place along South Central’s Historic Central Avenue District.

Referred to as “West Coast Harlem,” the Central Avenue district became the center of African American life in Los Angeles at the turn of the century.

Clubs such as Club Alabam and Jack’s Basket Room hosted some of the most talented Black entertainers of the jazz-era.
