LOS ANGELES — Every color, every image, every detail needs to be just right – because if it doesn’t catch your eye and make you want to go see the film, Kenny Gravillis has failed.

“The theater, on billboards, social media, everywhere,” said Gravillis.

Together with his wife, he runs Gravillis Inc., which creates key art for some of the biggest movies you’ve ever seen including Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Blackklansman, Straight Outta Compton, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and If Beale Street Could Talk.

Studios comes to him with ideas, and he and his team take it from there.

“We came from the music industry so we came a little different,” he said.

This year, the Golden Globes are recognizing two films he's worked on: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Dolemite Is My Name.

For Gravillis, it’s a cherry on top.

He take every detail seriously, he knows every click of the mouse is affecting change. In fact, he has never loved the state of Hollywood more – the films shining light on truth, documentaries telling unknown stories.

“Now more than ever, we’re in a situation where there’s room to be artful and room to be expressive,” he said.

And while he loves all his projects, there’s a certain draw to films of social impact, films that can create change. When there’s such an important message to be told, he wants to do what he can to get it seen.

“When it comes to the poster, for me it’s about intrigue. Does this poster intrigue you enough to go see this film? That’s numero uno,” he said.

Looking around at his posters, Gravillis points out more and more films directed by women. While he loves the forward movement of inclusion and diversity in film and content creation, he’s still hoping for more diversity in his realm, design.

“There’s not a lot of people of color going into art schools and going into these jobs, part of it is knowing that this world exists,” he said.

He and his team want to start going into high schools to bridge that gap. While he works on getting more young people into his side of the industry, he hopes the films keep doing their jobs – helping viewers absorb the message.
