MURRIETA, Calif. — School districts as far north as Shasta County and as far south as San Diego have adopted parent-notification policies focused on gender identity.

Most of these policies require teachers to notify parents if their child decides to use different pronouns at school.

Several lawsuits have followed against many of these school districts. At the Murrieta Valley Unified School District, two teachers concerned about student safety filed complaints with the California Department of Education over the policy.

The results of that investigation prompted the Department of Education to order the school district to remove it, citing discrimination toward a particular group of students.

In response, the Murrieta Valley Board of Education defied the state order, amending and again passing the policy and calling for it to take effect as soon as possible.

The Department of Education has since opened another investigation into the matter.
