EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Chino Valley Unified School District voted in favor of a policy that requires schools to notify parents if their child identifies as transgender.
State Superintendent Tony Thurmond spoke at a school board meeting against the policy, saying it potentially endangers LGBTQ+ students.
Security escorted Thurmond out after attempting to respond to criticism from Chino Valley School Board President Sonja Shaw.
Under the policy, schools will notify parents if their child seeks to change their name or pronouns or asks for access to gender-based sports, bathrooms or changing rooms that do not match their assigned gender at birth.
State Assemblyman Bill Essayli and State Superintendent Tony Thurmond joined Spectrum News 1 to voice their opinions on the new policy.
