LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach City College has named its valedictorian for the Class of 2020.
Abimbola Idowu Mitchell will address her classmates at LBCC’s first virtual commencement ceremony at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 12.

“My husband asks me all the time ‘how does it feel?’ and I’m just like I really I don’t know. I don’t know maybe when I see my speech and I see myself up there maybe then it will really dawn on me I am valedictorian,“ said Mitchell.
Mitchell came to America from Nigeria as a child. She plans to continue on to graduate school for a doctorate degree in physical therapy.
“I could jump a hurdle as tall as me that’s where I am right now,” said Mitchell.
LBCC has announced summer classes are all online and most fall 2020 classes will also be online.
In addition to the virtual ceremony, the Class of 2020 will be welcomed back to walk in LBCC’s next in-person commencement ceremony in 2021.
