WHITTIER, Calif. – A high school senior in Whittier is graduating and signing off the air for her school's student newscast from home.
Graduating senior Kacie Rodriguez attended Pioneer High School for four years. The last dance of her high school career was winter formal. After years of going without a formal dance, she fought hard to reinstate it as associated student body president.
“It’s definitely not what I expected, but we’re taking each day one day at a time,” said Rodriguez.
While Rodriguez worked her way up to the highest elected role at her school, she also climbed the ladder of her school’s newscast to become anchor and editor for the Titan News Flash.
Once schools closed, Rodriguez and her team decided to put together and publish the entire broadcast from home. They haven’t missed a deadline. Teachers, students, and administrators film and submit their own videos. Rodriguez anchored from her bedroom.
“It’s definitely been an adjustment, but I think I like that we’re doing it and that we’re using this as a way to contact our students and connect with them,” said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez plans to attend the University of California Santa Barbara. As an aspiring English major, her ultimate goal is to be a high school teacher.
The final student broadcast will be June 3.
