LOS ANGELES — Signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2022, Senate Bill 1137 prohibits the issuance of well permits and the construction and operation of new production facilities within a health protection zone, or HPZ, of 3,200 feet from a sensitive receptor.
The California Independent Petroleum Association, or CIPA, led a "Stop the Energy Shutdown" campaign, which qualified the veto referendum for the November 2024 ballot, and supported an overturn the law vote on the referendum.
The Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California and its partnership with Jane Fonda and the LA arts community raised more than $14 million in support of the bill through an art auction at Christie's and benefit exhibition at Gagosian Beverly Hills, California Independent Petroleum Association announced it would withdraw a referendum on California’s landmark law, SB 1137, to protect neighborhoods from toxic oil drilling from the November ballot.
