LOS ANGELES — Little notes, for big ideas. That’s the creative style Lynne Thompson prefers.

The Angeleno savors every moment she has to take in the world around her and write poetry that connects our world.

Her passion for the prose is now being recognized as she was recently inaugurated as the official Poet Laureate of Los Angeles by Mayor Garcetti. She was overwhelmed when she heard she was selected as the official representative for the city.

“I think the word is shocked. I was shocked. I’m still processing it a little bit,” she said,

With the new title, Thompson is preparing to write poems about topics that have impacted Los Angeles, particularly throughout the pandemic.

“In the context of the city, particularly architecture, what buildings do we tear down, which ones do we cherish and keep and why, and I think this is particularly poignant right now when we are in the middle of a pandemic, so many businesses have gone out of business,” she explained.

Thompson also plans on providing workshops to L.A.’s diverse communities, she hopes the self-expression poetry gave her, having processed the feelings of growing up adopted, will also give students a platform to heal and connect.

“I’m also anxious to have the opportunity to work with communities that might not have the chance to be exposed to poetry, or may be a little afraid of poetry because they’re not used to it," she said. "So I’m really excited for those opportunities, as well as to represent the poetry community in this city which is very strong.”
