LOS ANGELES — The public has been watching the hatching through the Friends of Big Bear Lake's live webcam. As of this writing, two eaglets have hatched with the third starting to hatch as of Thursday afternoon, March 6.

Jackie and Shadow are taking turns incubating the eaglets to keep them at a constant temperature amid the arrival of winds and snow.

The eaglets will start to fledge (learning to leave the nest) at around 10 to 14 weeks old.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that eagle populations have quadrupled since 2009 after seeing a decline in numbers earlier in the 20th century.

The public is being asked to send in suggestions for naming the eaglets, the final names to be chosen by Big Bear third graders.
