ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. — With Orange County pet shelters packed, OC Animal Care has waived adoption fees for November and will provide a free bag of food and even microchip the animals.
Fifth District County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett has committed $100,000 to get each furry creature a permanent home, covering the cost of required spay or neuter procedures typically charged to customers.
“As an animal lover and proud owner of my cat, Misha, who I adopted from OC Animal Care, I strongly encourage anyone thinking of adding a four-legged friend to their family, to take advantage of this amazing opportunity,” she said in a news release. “During the month of November, my office will waive adoption fees and provide a starter bag of pet food for anyone adopting a pet.”
Adoption fees for dogs can range from $150 to $225, while cats can cost $125 to $175.
Right now, there are 220 dogs, about 18 over the limit and a coming surge of cats. While OC Animal Care currently has nearly 140 open spots for cats, 293 are in foster care and will soon need a home or spot in the county shelter. The shelter also has more than 50 rabbits and guinea pigs.
“I don’t think we can make it any easier for people looking to adopt a pet,” said Pauline Colvin, a spokesperson for the supervisor.
People interested in adopting a pet can find a list online, complete with a photo, name, weight and breed of the dog.
“I think there’s definitely a need out there for pets and hopefully this program will get people to make an appointment or walk in,” Colvin said. “If they don’t particularly mesh with a dog, they can see another one without having to make another appointment.”
The office will sponsor a pet food pantry Nov. 12 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at OC Animal Care located at 1630 victory road in Tustin.
The shelter is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. People looking to adopt can walk in or set up an appointment by calling 714-935-6848. Adoption hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
