WASHINGTON — First-term Republican Florida Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna was the sponsor behind the resolution that censured California Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff in the House Wednesday night. 

Out of the eight pieces of legislation sponsored by Luna — who was endorsed by Trump and was one of the first members of Congress to endorse him as he runs for the White House again — five have been aimed at Schiff. Her resolution to censure the congressman for his involvement in investigating former President Donald Trump passed along party lines. 

"There's a lot of support within the Republican Conference for this," Luna said in an interview with Spectrum News. "And I think that this is one of many to come, but hopefully it sets the precedent that you can't exploit, abuse your position of power in order to hurt people."

Schiff is a former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. On the House floor, Luna blasted Schiff for seeking and leading investigations into allegations that Trump’s 2016 campaign colluded with Russia, investigations that she says cost taxpayers $32 million. 

Special Counsel Robert Mueller concluded Russia interfered in that election, but said he did not find evidence that Trump's campaign conspired with Russia. 

"As chair of the House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff launched an all-out political campaign built on baseless distortions against a sitting U.S. president at the expense of every single citizen in this country, and the honor of the House of Representatives," Luna said on the House floor. 

Schiff denounced the vote as political and, as Trump faces multiple criminal investigations and indictments, noted the timing.

"Donald Trump is under indictment for actions that jeopardize our national security and McCarthy would spend the nation's time on petty political payback, thinking he can censure or fine Trump's opposition into submission," Schiff said. "But I will not yield, not one inch."

Luna was endorsed by Trump in her run for the House, and she was one of the first members of Congress to endorse the former President as he runs for the White House again. 

"Censure votes or oversight votes are becoming an increasing norm to brand build, to basically plant your flag in the ground and say, ‘I am the one, see my resolution that's holding the other side accountable in these ways," said Casey Burgat, with George Washington University.
