President Donald Trump has been outspoken on the shutdown and has maintained his claim that Democrats could end the shutdown in just 15 minutes. President Trump has also said he has complete power to call a national emergency, but said he shouldn’t have to and insists that the Democrats should do their job.

Representative Salud Carbajal of California's 24th congressional district has denounced the idea of a border wall, which occupies the center of the ongoing government shut down. Representative Carbajal spoke to Spectrum News 1, saying the president should open the government immediately and accused Trump of being “irresponsible.”

Carbajal, a Democrat whose district spans parts of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura County, said he hopes the shutdown will end soon, as there are many workers feeling the pain from being furloughed or being made to work without pay.

Rep. Carbajal paid a visit to the southern border at the start of the New Year. Speaking to border patrol officials, he said officers told him they needed more resources and more “boots on the ground.”

“Not once did I hear a wall,” said Representative Carbajal.
