LOS ANGELES, CA – For those who ask Paul Levine, he will tell you that his business is much more than a newsstand.
- Laurel Canyon News still thriving after 30 years
- Newsstand has been located there since 1947
- Sells to customers all over the world
"I helped build this community over the last 30 years," said Levine.
He has owned Laurel Canyon News on Ventura and Laurel Canyon Boulevard since 1990, but this location has served customers even longer.
"There’s been a newsstand at this intersection since I believe 1947," he said.
Levine stocks his shelves with more than 2,000 titles, everything ranging from international newspapers like Le-Monde to word searches, automotive magazines, and coloring books for adults.
"They just sell out and this is something new too. You know, it’s relaxing, makes people feel good," Levine said.
One of his survival secrets? He sells to customers throughout the country and all over the world. His stand even has a small Twitter following.
"We're shipping this out to Great Britain," he said pointing to a box.
Of course, he has his regulars, like Dee, who stop by every week.
“It’s convenient and the employees are lovely, really nice people," Dee said.
And Levine would agree.
"I actually work shifts like today. I enjoy the people that come in here," said Levine.
He insists print is not dead and that some magazines these days are sought after more for their cultural importance than news.
"We have a lot of magazines that people want to collect and put on their coffee table and talk about it," Levine said.
Still, he is well aware of the digital reality and the harsh consequences that have plagued other newsstands across Los Angeles.
"In the last five to six years, 15 have closed," said Levine.
But ultimately, Levine credits his good location, a wide-selection, and loyal customers for his success.
A neighborhood newsstand standing tall for its community.
"I hope they stay here forever," Dee said.
