LOS ANGELES, CA – Negotiations with the United Teachers Los Angeles and district officals are resuming at the Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters on Friday.

At 1 p.m. UTLA and the LAUSD will continue bargaining as the teachers’ strike looms on Monday. A walkout was scheduled for Thursday, but has been postponed for January 14.

The district claims that the court battle was delayed as a result of the union failing to notify LAUSD of their intent to strike through the proper paperwork.

The contentious issues between both parties include the district's $1.8 billion surplus, which the union believes could be used to increase teacher's pay to 6.5 percent, hire more support staff, and reduce class sizes. The district said they are already running a deficit, and cannot afford to meet the union's demands.

If no compromise is met by Friday and the court battle has not been settled, the union still plans to strike on Monday.

A hotline has been established by the district to answer questions from parents, and the community. The hotline will be staffed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. week days. The number is 213-443-1300.

UTLA represents 33,000 teachers in the LAUSD.
