WATTS, Calif. – Basketball allowed this senior to take his best shot at a new school. Amouray Gray is playing with his family during quarantine instead of the team that gave him a second chance.

“Family on me, family on three, 1-2-3 family,” said Gray.

The Dymally High School Senior Basketball team became his family when he transferred to the home of the challengers for his final year after struggling at his old school.

This last-minute change paid off, because he helped lead the team to their first ever CIF Championship. You can see them celebrating in a social media video.

“This was the first year my school won anything in any sport, so if we went to state and won that we would have been at the top,” said Gray.

The senior won on and off the court. His new school also brought him support, motivation, and drive to participate, get good grades, attend prom and graduate.

“I knew I was going to graduate, it was just a struggle before. I had to get my head right,” said Gray.

But then his world got turned upside down once coronavirus hit. There would be no more senior year events he worked so hard for, especially the ability to get his diploma on the stage in front of his mom who is so proud.

“It’s heart breaking, because everybody else got to graduate. We all worked hard, we should get the same the other senior classes got,” said Gray.

His winning team would also not be able to participate in the coveted state playoffs that were canceled.

“It hurt because I won’t get the chance to play high school sports. It’s over,” said Gray.

Even though all the monumental moments of senior year were taken away from Amouray and his peers, no one could ever take away the feeling of bringing home the CIF Championship and all the memories he made along the way.

“It gave me a family that made me want to go to these things and will give me memories after high school is over,” said Gray.

Senior year may be over, but the memories will last a life time.
