Linda Reed loves making her house a home. But sometimes, many times, she feels the need to get out.

“Without it, I would feel stuck,” she said.

Linda has bad arthritis, cataracts and is partially color blind --- meaning she can’t drive.

“It’s really been a handicap,” she said.

But thanks to the Independent Living Partnership’s TRIP Program, she has wheels…..well, a driver who does.

“Its very very hard because I’ve been used to doing these things on my own, being used to get to and fro where I need to go,” said Reed.

Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz and the Independent Living Partnership just announced a $1.3 million grant to the TRIP program.

“They feel like they’ve lost a sense of independence and freedom. That’s really heavy that’s really really distressing,” Congressman Ruiz said.

The program the congressman advocates for gives mileage reimbursements to volunteer drivers helping those who cant get around themselves, which is of major need in the Coachella valley.

“It’s not easy to take public transportation when its 115 or 120 outside,” he added.

Over the next three years, more than 4,500 people all over Riverside County just like Reed will get free rides to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other essential services.

“Grateful, grateful. This is a gift,” Reed said.

A gift that gives her a life outside of home.
