SANTA ANA, Calif. – It was a close call, but in the end, Mater Dei came out on top in the first round of the open division playoffs defeating Etiwanda, 54-50.
The Monarchs were led by the play of junior guard Alyssa Durazo-Frescas, who had 16 points on the night.
With the win, the girls’ team joins their boy counterparts who upset the No. 2 seeded Centennial Huskies on their home court in overtime.

Both teams will be back in action this week for the second round of pool play. The boys will travel to Temecula on Tuesday to take on Rancho Christian, while the girls will welcome Lynwood on Wednesday night.
