As a kid growing up in Southern California, Ferdinand Furer spent most of his time outdoors. Whether he was surfing, skiing, or playing other outdoor sports, he grew up to appreciate Mother Nature. As a kid, he was always reading the newspaper’s weather page and tuning in to local broadcasts to see if a storm was brewing in the Pacific that would bring big waves or fresh powder.

After high school graduation, Ferdinand moved to Northern California to attend San Jose State University to pursue his dream of becoming a meteorologist. He graduated with a degree in Radio-Television, and his plans shifted from being a weather forecaster to being a newscast director. After 10 years of directing news in the San Francisco Bay Area, he realized it was time to get back to his childhood dreams.

It was time to go back to school!

In 2009, Ferdinand completed Mississippi State University’s Broadcast Meteorology Program and earned his B.S. in Geo-Sciences a year later.

Ferdinand's first weather job took him back to NBC Bay Area where he produced weather segments on a freelance basis. From NBC Bay Area, he moved down the 101 Freeway to the Monterey Bay area to get some on-air experience. From here, he moved to Billings, Montana where he became a full-time meteorologist. This is where he experienced covering tornadoes, 100+ degree heatwaves, and Arctic outbreaks with temperatures 20 to 30 degrees below zero.

His next meteorologist job took him to the plains of North Dakota where he got to cover more extreme weather.

From North Dakota, Ferdinand moved back home to SoCal. He was lucky enough to spend four years as a stay-at-home dad for his two young daughters. He says that was "one of the best experiences" in his life. His favorite times are just hanging out with his wife and daughters. He also shares his home with two dogs and a bearded dragon.

Ferdinand couldn’t be happier forecasting weather for Spectrum News 1 and living in SoCal where he grew up.
