It’s an end of an era for the D&D Airport Café located inside the Riverside Municipal Airport. David Pennington and his wife, Delmy Pennington, the "Ds" behind the restaurant's name, are retiring after serving customers for 33 years.

New Year’s Eve was their last day of work before one of their servers, Leimamo Taylor, took over the business.

“I just want to make them proud and the customers proud,” said Taylor, who has worked with the couple for more than three years.

The couple's decision to retire was not an easy one, but they say the business will be in good hands with Taylor.

“She’s a very nice person and I know the customers love her. They will be coming here for her like they did for us,” said Delmy Pennington.

The Penningtons finished their last shift like all of their other shifts. David took care of things in the kitchen, while his wife greeted and served customers in the dining area.

“I’m excited, but yet apprehensive. I don’t really want to retire yet, but you know it’s time,” said David Pennington.

The restaurant was his dream. Pennington’s first job in the restaurant business was a dishwasher when he was 16-years-old. He worked his way up the food chain, literally.

“I worked for Thrifty Drug Store and had a chain of restaurants and then they closed them all up so then I bought a restaurant and took a chance. I mortgaged my house and bought a restaurant,” said Pennington.

This is something Taylor understands.

“I put all of my money, all of my savings, everything that my dad provided for me into buying this restaurant and I’m going to grow it 20 times more. Hopefully,” said Taylor.

The Penningtons' plans for retirement will include a lot of traveling and relaxing. Delmy wants to visit every state in the nation. As for Leimamo, her dreams of running her own restaurant are becoming a reality. She is changing the restaurant name to Riverside Airport Café.
