It has been over a month since the Borderline shooting in Thousand Oaks where 13 people lost their lives. It has been a time of grieving for many families, including the Coffman Family, who lost their son Cody that night.

In the last month, they also welcomed someone new. Jason and Sheri Coffman welcomed a baby girl, Aurora.

“I feel God took my son and gave me a daughter because he knew Cody would be gone,” says Cody's father Jason.

Aurora's the first girl in a family of boys. Jason says Cody was so excited to have a sister, and he will continue to look over her.

“He’s her guardian angel,” says Jason.

Jason gets through each day by praying to God, and by talking to Cody. He knows Cody would want him to stay strong when times are tough.

Cody’s friends say he was a hero the night of the shooting and helped them escape the bar.

“He always said he wanted to protect and serve, and to know he did that makes me so proud,” says Jason.

As Christmas approaches, Jason is reminded of Cody. Usually he is the one putting up the Christmas lights.

“It’s less about the presents this year and more about being together,” says Sheri.

It will be the first Christmas without Cody, and the first Christmas with Aurora.

“I lost my best friend, but I gained a new one. I pray to God and keep moving,” says Jason.

Jason says the family is all connected by the number 29. Cody was born on August 29, Aurora was just born on November 29, and Jason was born on December 29. He added that his first birthday without Cody will be hard, but he wants to keep his son's legacy alive by continuing to talk about him, and even plans on starting a scholarship to help other young men like Cody become umpires.
