A select group of singers from the men's and women's vocal quartets at Cal Lutheran University sang the national anthem before the Los Angeles Rams played the Kansas City Chiefs at the Los Angeles Coliseum earlier this week.

The performance was part of a special tribute to first responders and the victims of the Borderline shooting -- one of which had been a former soloist with this choir.

Before the students sang at the Coliseum they rehearsed together and reflected on the loss of their friend and fellow choir member.

“It’s going to be emotional,” said soprano Maddy Barnes. “We’re all going to do it in honor of the victims and we’re going to do it for them. This is for them.”

And especially for Justin Meek.

Meek was one of the 12 people killed at the Borderline Bar and Grill less than two weeks ago. The recent Cal Lutheran graduate sang in the choir all four years he attended the university, performing with the tight-knit group at home and abroad.

“Oh, he was wonderful,” Barnes says. “He was an absolute light.”

“He’s just like a ball of joy and happiness, you know? He was just the heart of the choir,” said bass singer, Jordan Erickson.

The choir sang at Justin’s funeral this past weekend, joining in with a recording of him performing a solo.

“I’m very glad to have had the opportunity to sing with the choir and with him one last time because that’s just such a special and unique experience,” Erickson says.

“He would have loved to sing with all of the first responders in front of all the football fans. He loved football,” said Erickson.
