“A bitterness almost because I wish that was the case then,” Simone Daly said through tears about the California Highway Patrol's increased safety measures.

She lives day in and day out making sweets at her shop, Cupcakes and Curiosities, all the while thinking about her little daughter, Haven, who was killed by a drunk driver.

“She had so much life ahead of her and she was robbed,” Daly said.

Not a day goes by that she doesn’t think about the minute that changed every moment of her life, when her only child was taken away from her. A drunk driver broadsided the car Haven was riding in as her grandmother drove her to a church dance.

“The man who hit them was a repeat offender,” Daly said.

Now, a California Highway Patrol initiative is aimed at keeping people like that off the road, especially in the San Gorgonio Pass. The increase in patrols was made possible by a $112,000 grant.

“It allows officers to have overtime and write additional tickets,” Officer Darren Meyer of the CHP said.

“We need that so other families can feel safe,” Daly said.

When asked to describe little Haven, she has no words, but she does have a plea for drivers to slow down and concentrate on driving.

Take it from Daly, a woman struggling to heal an impossible wound.
