As the animal care manager at the Living Coast Discovery Center, Aiyana Reissman is always excited to share Mother Nature’s artistry with others. Tyto the barn owl, is one of her best examples.
“Beautiful feathers and wings that help them fly through the sky silently,” Reissman said. “If we had eyes like an owl, we’d be able to read a book from across a football field.”
She is excited to show off more of the beautiful animals during San Diego Museum Month.
“We’re kind of like a living museum, right?” she said. “You’re still able to see a lot of the natural history that we have in San Diego, just demonstrated through the animals we have here instead.”
Bob Lehman is executive director of San Diego Museum Council and said free passes are available for everyone. During San Diego Museum Month, residents and visitors enjoy special half-off admission at over 45 local museums, historic sites, gardens, aquariums and other cultural destinations throughout San Diego County.

Leiman said enhancing museum accessibility is a critical component of Museum Month. One of his current favorite attractions is the Mingei International Museum.
“It’s a world-class museum,” he said. “I mean, you walk in here and you think you’re in New York. And I think we’ll see people coming from all over the world to come and experience the Mengei and the rest of what San Diego has to offer.”
Reissman said February is the perfect time to support many museums who struggled to survive the shutdowns of the pandemic.
“We’re starting to see school groups coming back, which is excellent too, but really getting those families back out here to enjoy this space is going to be so important and critical to us moving forward,” Reissman said.
