FULLERTON, Calif. — Peak into the Rosary girls basketball gym and it's an eerie sight. There are no teams practicing, no sounds of footsteps running down the stairs.

Instead all that is left behind is a feeling of a season cut too short.

On Thursday morning, the California Interscholastic Federation made the decision to cancel all state championships scheduled for this weekend.

Rosary was set to defend their division one title on Friday night.

“We thought it was like a dream almost that this is not really happening, but when it finally sank in our kids were devastated," said head coach Richard Yoon. "“We were hoping for the best. But it didn’t work out that way.”

Yoon was tasked with giving his team the heartbreaking news, girls like Bryn Boznanski who were so looking forward to playing their last game.

“I was just in shock," she said. "It’s hard that we didn’t know that this was going to be the last. At least with the game we knew, but we already played it and didn’t know what we had when we had it.”

Although both she and coach Yoon understand why the decision was ultimately made — to protect the health and safety of student athletes — they just weren't ready for an end to the season that they didn't see coming.

“Although there might be an asterisk that ties this whole season, you can’t take away what they’ve done," said Yoon.
