You know who to call if you've got a ghost problem, but what about a pigeon problem?

Mike Bordanaro is a federally-licensed falconer and co-owner and operator of a natural bird abatement service called the Hawk Pros.

Bordanaro and his two-year-old Harris hawk Shady were recently hired to clear pesky birds from a shopping center in Westlake Village.

Untrained predator birds are afraid to enter urbanized areas, so birds such as pigeons and crows can get out of control - causing unsanitary messes that can end up costing business owners.

Once Shady was released, his presence agitated a large murder of crows that took flight and tried to bully the hawk into leaving.

"He doesn't care," said Bordanaro. "They can't do anything to him. Once they all see him, and once they realize he's not going anywhere, they'll move on."

It's like a scene out of Hitchcock's 'The Birds,' but as Bordanaro and Shady made their way around the mall, the crows quickly took the hint.

Introducing a real predator is the most effective way to restoring the natural balance to an urbanized area.

The job isn't always easy and things can go wrong. Bordanaro once lost one of his hawks when a wild bird attacked it on a job in downtown Los Angeles.

"The other falcon dove down and nailed him and he was just done," said Bordanaro. "He was one of my favorite Harris hawks. He was a great bird."

Bordanaro and Shady are partners in the truest sense. According to Bordanaro, the pair have to have absolute trust, otherwise neither of them will get very far.
