LOS ANGELES (CNS) — The animated family film The Croods: A New Age opened on top of the North American box office this weekend, grossing a healthy $9.7 million despite reduced theater capacity amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The comedy/horror film Freaky was a distant second in its third week of release, taking in $770,000, Comscore reported.

The War With Grandpa, a family comedy in its eighth week in theaters, took third place with $643,936 Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada.

The drama Let Him Go took fourth place with $453,000, followed by the horror film Come Play with $387,000.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were Honest Thief ($350,000), Tenet ($300,000), The Santa Clause ($170,000), Vanguard ($165,000), and The Last Vermeer ($145,000).

Indoor movie theaters in Los Angeles and Orange counties are closed indefinitely due to the pandemic, leaving only limited outdoor screenings available in Southern California.
