PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (CNS) — Palm Springs Unified School District has reported more than 60 COVID-19 cases since reopening classrooms last week, it was announced Friday.

PSUSD reported on their COVID-19 case tracker site that a total of 47 students and 15 staff members across 27 schools have tested positive for COVID- 19 since the school year began last Wednesday.

The district updates the case tracker website daily and breaks down case numbers per school, distinguishing between cases involving students and teachers. It can be viewed at psusd.us/Page/7431.

Once a case is no longer considered active, it will be removed from the District's tracker.

Parents of students who come into direct contact with a positive COVID- 19 case will be notified by the district's Health Services Department.

More than 20,000 students returned to classrooms last Wednesday under new COVID-19 protocols that, according to the district, stemmed from recommendations from the California Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The new protocols require masks indoors regardless of vaccination status, but no longer require social distancing indoors. Masks are optional outdoors and "high-touch surfaces" are required to be cleaned on a daily basis, according to a 10-page document highlighting the district's COVID-19 precautions.
