The fire started as a vehicle fire Thursday afternoon and spread to nearby vegetation. It has now spread up and down the mountains. No home or property damage has been reported, but dozens of homes are threatened.

Mark Chapman got a call from his friend who lives in Snowcreek but is out of town, and drove to the area from Newport Beach Friday morning.

“She heard about the fire and she’s really worried," he said. "She’s a painter. She has all her oil paintings and all her valuables and wanted me to go and try and rescue a few things. The fire is so imminent to the community at this point and time they are not allowing anyone up there.”

Chapman said about 40 homes sit at the base of the mountains in the small incorporated community.

Heather Macey is worried the fire will continue to grow closer to her home. Macey has lived in the Palm Springs area for 15 years, and her family has never faced a fire threat before.

“It’s just unreal," she said. "It’s sad for California."

Despite all the fires burning in California and the west, more than 200 firefighters are fighting the Snow Fire trying to stop the spread.

“Say a little prayer for the Snowcreek folks,” Chapman asked.
