RIVERSIDE (CNS) - Temperatures will begin heating up throughout Riverside County Tuesday and sweltering conditions are expected in the Coachella Valley on Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening.

High pressure centered over west Texas will make its way into Southern California through Wednesday, potentially causing the mercury in the Coachella Valley to reach 110 on Wednesday and 109 on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

High temperatures Tuesday are forecast to reach 105 in the Coachella Valley, 97 in the San Gorgonio Pass, 93 in Hemet, 92 in Lake Elsinore and Riverside, 86 in Temecula and 83 in Idyllwild.

The NWS issued an excessive heat watch that will be in effect from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening in the Coachella Valley.

 NWS officials urged residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Also, young children and pets should be never be left unattended in a vehicle, with car interiors able to "reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes," according to the NWS.

Senior citizens can dial 211 to be informed of services available.

Riverside County officials opened 14 cooling centers countywide on Monday with mandatory mask wearing and social distancing protocols. They are set up in community buildings like schools or senior centers already equipped with air-conditioning, and are expected to remain open until October, or as temperatures warrant.

Among the 14 locations, five are in the Coachella Valley, two in the Banning Pass, one in Moreno Valley, one in Temecula and five in Riverside.

Highs in the Riverside metropolitan area could reach 100 on Wednesday before dropping to the low- to mid-90s on Thursday, forecasters said.
