LOS ANGELES — Southern California gas prices are likely to fall to less than $5 per gallon over the next few days and weeks, the American Automobile Association reported Thursday. After peaking at $6.46 last month, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area has been steadily falling and is now $5.87. That’s 19 cents less than last week and 53 cents less than last month, though it is still $1.52 higher than a year ago.

“As of today, Los Angeles wholesale gasoline prices have dropped by about $1.50 since their highest point in early June and are now at their lowest level since Feb. 28,” Auto Club spokesperson Doug Shupe said in a statement. “A few stations in Los Angeles and San Diego counties have already dropped their prices below $5 a gallon, and we would expect more stations will join them provided current trends continue.”

According to the real-time fuel-price website GasBuddy.com, the lowest price for a gallon of gas in the Southland on Thursday is $4.99. That price is only available at two stations, however: G&M in Long Beach and Costco in Signal Hill. Several other stations are charging less than $5.20, including multiple SoCal ARCO and Sam’s Club locations.
