LOS ANGELES — Angelenos who need a cheap and easy way to get around this holiday season will be able to ride Metro for free Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will not collect fares on any of its buses and trains from 9 p.m. Friday through 2 a.m. Saturday, and from 9 p.m. Dec. 31 through 2 a.m. Jan. 1.

The fare gates at Metro rail stations will be unlatched, and fare boxes will not make deductions from TAP cards.

On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, Metro buses and trains will operate on their normal weekday schedules, with trains running roughly every 20 minutes after 8 p.m. and the last trains departing about midnight. Metro is not offering overnight service on New Year’s Eve.

For Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, Metro will operate on a holiday service schedule except for the L line, providing service to the Tournament of Roses and Rose Bowl game. Following the parade, Metro will run a shuttle service between Sierra Madre Villa Station and the post-parade float viewing area in Victory Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Jan. 2, the shuttle service will operate from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition, Metro will offer free rides on its bike share platform starting Friday until Jan. 2. Rides are free for the first 30 minutes, after which Metro charges $1.75 for every additional half hour. Multiple free rides can be taken in a single day with the promo code 010122.
