When the Hertz rental car company announced it would buy 100,000 Tesla Model 3s in late October, it was the biggest single order for electric vehicles ever.
But just a few days later, Hertz CEO Mark Fields said he might double the order by 2023 and make as many as 150,000 of those Teslas available to Uber drivers through a program that launched in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego on Monday.
Five things you need to know:
- Up to 50,000 of the Tesla Model 3s Hertz ordered last week will be made available to Uber drivers.
- Uber drivers who have given at least 150 rides and who have a rating of at least 4.7 stars are eligible for the program.
- Model 3 rentals for Uber drivers cost $334 per week and include unlimited miles, maintenance and insurance. The only additional cost drivers incur is charging the vehicle.
- Uber drivers can find and book Teslas from Hertz through Uber's Vehicles Marketplace in the Uber driver app.
- Uber drivers who rent Tesla Model 3s through Hertz will earn an extra $1 per trip.
