TORRANCE, Calif. — In June, Intuitive Machines’ commercially built Nova-C lunar lander will carry NASA payloads and commercial cargo, launching aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to the moon.
The Nova-C lunar lander uses the Scorpius Space Launch Company’s (SSLC) liner-less, all-composite tanks that weigh much less than traditional tanks with metallic linings, which means more weight can be devoted to payload.
SSLC’s CEO Markus Rufer explained that many in the space launch arena believed “cryogenic all-composite liner-less pressure vessels were not achievable” but after years of development and testing the technology is poised to help usher in a new generation of space travel and exploration.
The technology was developed with SSLC’s sister company, Microcosm, Inc. which specializes in reducing space mission cost, providing end-to-end mission support.
