PERRIS, Calif. — GPC Smart is an animal ID system that brings pet identification from its analog past into today’s digital information age.

It consists of digital pet tags that allow anyone with a smartphone to identify the pet’s identity and its owner.

No need to have it scanned for an embedded “chip” by a special device at a veterinarian’s office or an animal control center.

The company that makes the smart tags is marketing it for use by first responders, to help rescuers reunite pets with their owners during natural disasters such as a wildfire.
