VENTURA, Calif. — Action sports fans will have a chance to see the X Games in California live for the first time in a decade when the legendary annual event stops in San Diego, Los Angeles and Ventura this July. The legendary competition for high-flying sports on wheels announced Wednesday that it will tour Southern California from July 16-23.

More than 150 athletes will compete at X Games California in three disciplines: skateboarding, BMX and motocross. Logan Martin, Mike Varga and Garrett Reynolds are among the BMX athletes who have been invited so far. Julien Vanstippen, Rob Adelberg and Colby Raha will compete in motocross. Shane O’Neill, Momiji Nishiya, Sky Brown and Jamie Foy will compete in skateboarding.

The full roster of athletes will be announced at a later date, along with musical guests. This summer’s X Games California will be the first time in three years that fans will be able to see their favorite extreme sports in a large event format. X Games California kicks off in San Diego on July 16 and will stop for a pop-event, competition and kick-off launch party in LA the following week before culminating with a three-day competition and interactive festival at the Ventura County Fairgrounds July 21-23.

“I am looking forward to seeing X Games return to a big fan experience and to celebrate skateboarding like never before,” skateboarding legend and 10-time X Games gold medalist Tony Hawk said in a statement. “I hope I can come up with some new tricks by then.”

The first X Games took place in Providence and Newport, Rhode Island, in 1995 and frequented Southern California for several years afterwards. San Diego hosted two X Games in the 1990s, and LA hosted them from 2003 to 2013 before the event became international.

“We are thrilled to return to the home of action sports this summer,” X Games Chief Executive Steve Flisler said in a statement. “We are reimagining events along the coast of California and strengthening the fan experience whether you’re watching live in person or on broadcast.”

Tickets to X Games California are available through the Fever app and will go on sale May 10 at 9 a.m. ESPN and ABC will also broadcast and livestream the games.
